Cataract Implant Types

There are many different manufactures of implants. They are available in a wide variety of design and power. Dr. Matzkin has selected to use the most inert implants that provide the best vision and safety for your eyes.

Standard implants provide a fixed focus and patients with these lenses will most likely require some form of glasses after surgery.

Multifocal implants allow distance and near vision without glasses.

Toric implants correct for astigmatism; reading glasses still required.

For patients with astigmatism undergoing implant surgery who wish to have uncorrected reading vision (no reading glasses), multifocal implants with LRI (limbal corneal relaxing incisions) or LASIK surgery is a good option. LASIK surgery provides more accurate outcomes but for low levels of simple astigmatism LRI may be very successful.

Because of the success of cataract surgery Dr. Matzkin believes in earlier surgery when the lens is relatively soft and easier to remove. Coupled with the availability of premium implant options and the potential for reducing or eliminating glasses, this procedure is a win-win for patients over 40 years who have annoyance with reading glasses. If you have astigmatism, toric lenses can be inserted.
